Commerce City, Colorado is a city in the U.S. state of Colorado Springs and the county seat of El Paso County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 653,531. It is part of the Denver–Aurora–Lakewood micropolitan area. The first settlement in Commerce City was made on May 21, 1872 by Cache and Arapaho Indians led by Chief Joseph Smith as part of their relocation from Fort Lyon to what is now Commerce City after they were driven out of Utah.[1] In 1876, members of the Presbyterian Church moved to Commerce City from Telluride. The city name comes from a post office called "Commerce" which opened in 1878. The downtown core has been continuously built since its establishment including two high-rise hotels (the Marriott and Fairmont) and over 60 businesses that anchor Main Street between First Avenue and 15th Street NW. Downtown commerce dates back to at least 1860 when John Neely Clark founded what is now known as Neely's ice cream parlor on Main Street near where he currently resides[2]. Today there are more than 100 stores located throughout downtown along with restaurants, bars, nightclubs, theaters and other types of businesses that have found success in this vibrant commercial district.[3] In 1907 Republican presidential candidate Theodore Roosevelt campaigned through Commerce City while his Vice Presidential running mate Sarah Palin visited nearby Golden Valley Ranch during her unsuccessful run for Governor of Alaska; both candidates stopped in town prior to their return trip home across America respectively[4][5][6]. Roosevelt's visit served as an important boost for local economy as it helped promote tourism within the town which would later lead to another Republican victory in 1912[7]. Roosevelt also entertained dignitaries such as Kaiser Wilhelm II during his visit before departing for Chicago via train convoy escorted by destroyer USS Constitution[8]. During World War I Commerce City became one of several American cities bombed by Germany due to German naval intelligence being able to track Allied merchant shipping movements through British-controlled waters[9]. Over 50% destroyed or damaged with only a few buildings remaining standing following monthslong aerial bombing campaign,[10] much like many other small towns across Western Europe during that time period. The devastation done by war resulted in a decline in business activity for many years until Rapid Transit replaced streetcars with buses which revived downtown commerce beginning in the late 1960s[11][12][13]; finally reaching its current level today thanks largely to entrepreneur Craig Newmark who purchased nearly all Of Colorado Springs' blocks away from Old Colorado Springs Boulevard making him oneof North America's most influential urban boosters

As commerce grew along its banks of the Arkansas River it needed more space to accommodate growth and so Aurora Boulevard became Main Street while Second Avenue became North Main Street and finally Academy Road when Aurora Boulevard joined Interstate 25 south of town in 1965 Eventually all six streets formed what is now downtown Commerce City proper with only Academy Road leading northward into University Park through University Circle (now called Union Station) remaining as an open street running through commercial districts adjacent to I-25/Aurora Boulevard until late 1990s when new development began near Union Station resulting in Streetscape alterations including increased use of curbside parking lots for businesses between Auroraboulevard and I-25 northeast corner where traffic circles now exist providing more efficient routing for motorists around large complexes
