The Commerce City Shooting Club, founded in 1895, is one of the oldest shooting clubs in the United States. The club is located in Commerce City, Colorado and has been hosting shootathons and other firearms events since 1911. The club's origins date back to a group of men who met to discuss how they could improve their firearms skills. From there, the club began hosting monthly meetings where they would discuss new techniques and weapons. In 1911, the club formed a board of directors which included future Mayor of Commerce City Arthur Waddell and Rifleman/ Sheriff John Condon. The board developed a plan for creating a shooting range within the city limits which was approved by the Mayor and Town Council. In 1916, membership grew to over 100 shooters with 5 rifles and 10 shotguns. That same year, the club voted to change its name from The Riflemen to TheCommerceCityShootingClub. In 1917, they again changed their name when they became members of The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF). In 1928-29, NSSF hosted their first international championship tournament at Belle Isle Park in Detroit Michigan where theclub finished 2nd place behind Browning Arms Incorporated (BAI) . That same year also saw them host their first NRA convention at the Armory Show in New York City which resulted in them becoming an official NRA member society In 1935-36 both President Franklin D Roosevelt and Governor Orville Hargrave were guest speakers at a meeting held by the Club regarding arms control issues during World War II In 1945-46 two additional presidents were guest speakers at another meeting held by Club about arms control issues during World War II: Harry S Truman and George Marshall After several years hiatus due to World War II hostilities, TheCommerceCityShootingClub re-opened on July 1st 1951 with 50 new members including 11 active sheriffs from around Colorado Springs . During that time period they continued hosting annual tournaments with top results coming in 1953 when they wonners trophies for rifle & shotgun championships as well as handgun titles for novice & elementary shooters respectively
