Commerce City is a city in Grand County, Colorado, United States. The population was 11,702 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Grand County. The town of Commerce City was founded in 1876 by two brothers, George and Irvin Ladd. The first post office in the town was established on December 12, 1876. The town name derived from the fact that it was one of the few places near Denver where goods could be bought and sold without having to go through mail carriers or other middlemen. In 1902, a general store and hotel were built in downtown Commerce City. In 1912, a water tower and oil well were drilled in Commerce City; this led to its nickname "TheOil Hub of the World." A year later, Merchants Bank opened up shop in downtown Commerce City as well. In 1930s-1940s, many small businesses came into existence around downtown Commerce City because there were no banks located within close distance for customers to use. Many businesses had to open up larger stores due to increased competition from larger banks that had moved away from towns like Aurora and Denver during those years. On January 1, 1957, Grand County became an independent state when it was created following Colorado's admission into the United States as a state on February 14th of that year. As part of this changeover process, all local governments within Grand County were transferred over to become constituent units of newly created Larimer County; however, Commerce City remained within Grande Co., until November 30th when it became fully integrated into Larimer County pursuant to that county's creation ordinance No 7-1959 (PDF). It wasn't until 1990 when efforts began by then Mayor Wayne Allyn Longley towards creating nightlife and cultural attractions outside of DowntownCommerceCity started paying off as several bars/nightclubs opened up shop along with restaurants inside of what would become known as "DowntownCommerceCity". This influx of new life helped spur growth for both Businesses & residents alike which has continued today with numerous new development projects announced throughout 2018!
