He built a fort on top of an old volcano near what is now theanyon edge neighborhood. Waddell named his settlement after himself and his brothers Charles and David Waddell – meaning "At Home" or "Friendly Place". Commerce City grew quickly due to its excellent location along Interstate 25 and easy access to farming and mining opportunities. By 1910, it had become one of the most important commercial centers within San Miguel County. During World War II, Commerce City became one of the principal manufacturing sites for munitions production in western Colorado Springs. Boeing plant produced military aircraft such as B-29s and P-47s; other plants produced trucks, appliances, radios, missiles and other items essential to war production. In recent years Commerce City has experienced some significant redevelopment including new housing developments and restaurants near Interstate 25 as well as a new shopping mall adjacent to Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Military Park

Commerce City was founded in 1864 by local farmers as a small trading post on the lower White River. The first post office was established in 1865, and the city became incorporated in 1868. The city was named for Eli Whitney and his brothers, George and Amos Whitney.
