The first Target store was opened in 1875 by George Prentice in what is now the Merchants Row district of Commerce City. The store was initially located on Second Street between Belleview and Locust Streets. By 1902, the store had relocated to its current location on 3rd Street between Union and Delaware Streets. In 1927, Target became part of the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF). As part of NSSF’s mission, it developed target programs that promote fun and excitement for all shooters. Commerce City is a city in Arapaho County, Colorado, United States. The population was 5,648 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greeley-Aurora metropolitan area. Commerce City has been since 1875 the county seat for Arapaho County. The first permanent settlers were James and John White who arrived in 1869 from Illinois. They built a log cabin on the east side of North Market Street and named their settlement after their wagon company's store in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania that they had just left. The town would grow rapidly with its original location on a floodplain along South High Street between Pikes Peak Avenue and I-25/U.S.-40 which made it difficult to trade goods or build infrastructure necessary for growth such as schools, hospitals and bus service; but it did not stop people from coming to make their fortunes in commerce and industry - one of which was founded by Hiram Sibley who opened his own general store near what is now Main Street in 1870 after investing $5,000 he had saved up over thirty years working as a traveling salesman for various merchants including Richardsons & Company of Omaha Nebraska In 1876 when Arapaho County was organized it included all of present day Greeley and Aurora Counties except for Nederland which became its own separate county in 1886 Commerce City experienced rapid growth due to railroad construction during the late 19th century with numerous companies locating here including Northern Pacific Railway (NP), Denver & Rio Grande Railway (D&RGW), Burlington Railroad (BB&T) During World War II several munitions factories were located here including Rocky Mountain Arsenal Ammunition Plant (RMAP) operated by Boeing until 1992 while other industries such as electronics manufacturing have also locate here over time including Hewlett-Packard Corporation (HP) current site located on First Avenue North across from the Aurora Municipal Building
