It lies about 36 miles (61 kilometers) south of Denver and about 20 miles (30 kilometers) east of Fort Collins. The town began as a stagecoach stop on the Butterfield Trail between Denver and Fort Collins. In 1864, John Jacob Astor purchased land in Commerce City from John D'Arcy McGee for $5,000 cash. In 1865, General officer George Armstrong Custer stopped at Commerce City while on his way to fight the Sioux Wars in Iowa Territory. In 1872, Charles Evans Hughes established a flour mill in what is now known as Hughesville and served as president of the local bank until its closure in 1893. In 1896, J.P. Morgan organized an agricultural fair which attracted attention from around the world due to its innovative exhibits and large profits for exhibitors. Commerce City's economy changed with the bring of electric power by Edison Electric Illuminating Company (now GE) in 1912-13 when construction began on Colorado's first electrical intersection - Central Avenue & First Street - making it easier for goods to be transported between east and west COs without traveling down Interstate 25 or overstate routes such as I-70 or I-76
Commerce City is a city in San Miguel County, Colorado, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver–Aurora-Lakewood, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first post office in Commerce City was established on December 12, 1871. The name of the town was changed to Commerce City on October 14, 1907 after it became one of five towns in San Miguel County that were consolidated with Denver into the newly created municipality of Aurora on January 1, 1909. On July 16, 1912 a fire destroyed most of downtown Commerce City and killed six people; this event is known as the Great Fire of 1912. Commerce City experienced its heyday during World War II with an estimated population growth rate of 50%. After the war ended in 1945 the population declined by 10% due to a combination of retirements and new waves of immigrants from all over Europe and Asia who came to work in manufacturing jobs which had opened up following World War II. However, since then there has been no real significant growth or change to the demographics within or around CommerceCity other than some modest annexations from neighboring municipalities over time
