In 1836, John Brown and James Fenton organized an expedition into Kansas Territory to take possession of what is now Oklahoma. While on their way back to Texas, they encountered Native American warriors ambush them at Harney Peak. Brown was shot and killed while Fenton was captured and hanged. Toole became president of Toole & Haggerty Ammunition Manufacturing Company (later renamed Ruger) when it merged with Winchester Repeating Arms Corporation in 1907. Commerce City, Colorado is a small town located in the Front Range of Colorado. The population of Commerce City was 5,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The townsite was first settled by fur trappers in 1859. The post office was established in 1861 and named for John C. Fremont, who served as governor of California during the early 1860s. The first store in Commerce City was built on Broadway by J.W. Hood and Wm Hargrave in 1865. By 1870, there were five stores in town with a population of over 100 people each. Commerce City experienced rapid growth following its incorporation as a city on November 3, 1912. By 1914, it had become one of the fastest-growing cities in Colorado with an estimated population increase of 50%. The city's economy grew from agricultural to light manufacturing due to its location between Denver and Aurora and its accessibility to interstate highways 15 and 24 (the "First Mile" designation). In 1990, Commerce City became one of fifteen founding municipalities within the newly created Arapaho County pursuant to state legislation creating that county.[1] The economic success of Commerce City has led to several development initiatives which have contributed towards downtown revitalization: In 2000–2001, CommerceCity partnered with Sun Valley Partners LLCto develop a downtown retail district including over 100 stores covering an area exceeding . This project included renovation and expansion of twohistoric Central Business District buildings adjacent to University Avenue eastward into Sun Valley Village (a new entertainment district),[2][3] which also houses local government services including police headquarters and courthouse;[4] as well as major retail anchor tenants such as Sears Roebuck & Co., Macy’s Inc., JCPenney Inc., Nordstrom Department Stores Incorporated,[5] while preserving much historic architecture dating back to 1875;[6][7][8][9][10] resulting in an environmentally friendly redevelopment project which has drawn attention from both residents[11][12][13]and visitors alike since its inception;[14] together with other similar initiatives throughout Arapaho County slated for future completion or expansion

The town was founded in 1881 by George W. Smith and his family as a trading post on the confluence of the Arkansas and Rio Grande Rivers. The post office was opened in 1882 and named for George Washington Smith, father of the town's founder. In 1903, Commerce City became an incorporated municipality with a population of 590 people. In 1912, it annexed the unincorporated community of White Sands which had been established about two miles west of the original townsite. As part of this annexation, White Sands received water from Commerce City until 1951 when it began receiving water from Golden Road near present-day Golden Mesa. After World War II, Commerce City experienced rapid growth as an industrial center due to its proximity to major military bases and other manufacturing plants across Colorado and Mexico; however, during recent decades there has been little significant economic development within the town limits
Commerce City is located in Pueblo County, Colorado. The population was 9,536 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Pueblo County and the fifth-largest city in Colorado. Commerce City was founded by the Mormon settlers on April 6, 1847 as a small town named Harmony.The first post office opened in 1848 and was called Harmonyville. The name of the town changed to Commerce City on November 15, 1851 after it became an important center for trade with surrounding counties. In 1865, Commerce City became part of Denver and its boundaries expanded eastward to include portions of Arapahoe County. On January 1, 1905, Denver annexing Pueblo County made Commerce City an official municipality withinDenver's limits.On July 17, 1907, Denver proposed that all of Pueblo County be annexed into the city Limits amendment to annexation proposal number 7309 filed by Mayor George Wickersham which failed because no votes were cast against it.In 1914 Merchants National Bank built a $25 million steel plant east of downtown that continues to produce goods today known as Steelworks Park
