The town grew rapidly due to its location near the newly developed railroad line that connected Denver with Salt Lake City and otherColorado settlements. By 1890, CommerceCity had a population of 2,000 people and boasted a library, theater, cotton gin and several churches. Despite this growth momentum however, coffee revenues failed to keep up with expenses associated with expanding infrastructure such as new schools and roads. In 1907 the city government merged with Great Western to create one municipality under single governance which would allow for more efficient financial management and better allocation of resources across municipal boundaries
