The history of firearms in Commerce City, Colorado can be traced back to 1868 when two men, George and John Cook, started a gunsmith shop. The shop was located on Second Street and was the first gunsmith business in the town. Cook operated the business until his death in 1876. He left behind a legacy of excellence in firearm manufacturing and sales. In 1924, Harry J. Brown opened the Brown Gunshop & Arms dealership on Fourth Street which became one of the largest firearms dealers in Colorado. The dealership sold rifles, shotguns, handguns and other firearms products. In 1984, Harry J. Brown's son-in-law and grandson purchased the Brown Gunshop from Harry J. Brown's widow for $1 million dollars. The store continued to operate under new ownership until it closed its doors in 2009 due to financial difficulties. During World War II, Commerce City became an important center for arms production due to its location within close proximity to Denver and Fort Collins (the two major military bases). The city produced over 350 machine guns for use by the United States Armed Forces during WWII[1].
