Commerce City is a city in Colorado, United States. The population was 23,883 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area. Commerce City is nicknamed "The Town of Progress" because it has been an economic center for the region since the early 19th century. Commerce City began as settlers arrived in 1876 and named their town after George Washington Carver, who had opened a grocery store in downtown Commerce City. By 1887, there were three stores and sixty residents in what is now Commerce City. In 1905, the first post office was established in Commerce City and by 1910, there were ten businesses operating within its boundaries. In 1916, General Electric became one of the first companies to establish a plant in Commerce City when it built a plant on Tenth Avenue near Union Boulevard. This plant would become known as GEICO and remain active until 1984 when it merged with American Telephone & Telegraph Company (AT&T). The First National Bank of Commerce also founded in 1916 served as one of two banks that anchored Commercial Drive until 1979 when both vanished into bankruptcy. That same year saw the opening of Tower Records which remains an integral part of downtown today. That decade saw growth for businesses throughout downtown such as Mastercard processing centers which were located on Main Street before moving to Research Park Plaza later that decade; and One Colorado Place becoming home to PepsiCo’s original Bottling Plant No. 1 back in 1978 which still operates today as Pepsi USAColorado Inc.. Commerce City was founded in 1867 as a small town on the Colorado River. It became an important banking center during the late 19th century, and later developed into a major industrial city. Commerce City is also home to several museums, including the Colorado Museum of Natural History and the Denver Art Museum.
