The town was founded in 1876 by Elisha White and his brother James White as a small trading post on the banks of the Arkansas River. In 1879, white men who had emigrated from Scotland named Commerce City after their own home country – Edinburgh (Scotland). From 1880 to 1886, there were three postmasters: A. W. Hagan, Rufus Catton, and Jno.[1] Commerce City became an incorporated town in 1912 when it joined Loveland with other towns within Weld County that had adopted this form of government. At its incorporation ceremony, some citizens raised money through a local auction to purchase deeds to land located between Loveland and Westminster Reservoirs east of the center of town; this land would become what is now downtown Commerce City. In 1950, Commerce City became one of only two communities within the Ft Collins-Loveland metropolitan area to attain full city status when it voted approval by referendum from its residents; this change allowed for more control over city services and made it easier for businesses to locate within the municipality limits while still being able to operate as independent businesses outside of city regulations. For many years since then, Commerce City has been growing rapidly as an upscale shopping destination with several high-end malls located within easy walking distance of Downtown or both areas’ universities - including CU Boulder and Colorado State University - making it easily accessible for students or professionals working near campus or downtown Loveland.$3 million has been spent on redevelopment projects announced or under way in 2011 alone,[2][3] indicating not only continued growth but also increasing interest from landlords/developers as well as visitation rates by those seeking out places like “the best shopping around”[4]
