Gun barrels have a long and varied history in Commerce City, Colorado. The first guns were made here in the late 1800s, and early firearms were designed to shoot black powder rounds. In the 1920s, however, pistols and rifles became more popular, and gun barrel manufacturing evolved as well. Today, many of Commerce City’s firearms manufacturers specialize in making rifle barrels, shotgun barrels, or pistol barrels. The origins of gun barrel manufacturing can be traced back to 1887 when John W. Brown & Sons began creating pistols out of brass tubing. This type of barrel was used for short-barreled shotguns and other muzzle-loading handguns. By 1907, Brown had developed a new type of brass tube gun barrel that could fire both shot and ball ammunition. This new design proved successful, and Brown soon began producing rifle barrels as well. In 1922, Winchester Arms Co., Ltd., boughtBrown & Sons assets including the Brass Tube Gun Barrel factory in Clinton Township (now Commerce City). In 1923 Winchester purchased additional assets from George Hargrave which included a Shotgun Manufacturing plant at Cheyenne Mountain (now Canon City). These plants produced shotguns using the same brass tube barrel design that had been produced by Brown & Sons earlier in life. From these two plants alone, Winchester manufactured over 1 million barrels for various firearm types over the years! Today’s firearm manufacturers often use several different types of brass tubes when fabrication their weapons units (Rifle Barrels being one example). Each brand/type has its own unique Specifications which must be met before production begins on any given product line! Many companies also produces multiple calibers within a single style/ caliber family with specific bore diameters available to choose from!

In 1862, a school and jail were built near the present site of downtown Commerce City; it was first called "Homesickness Grove". A railroad station was built nearby in 1865 and named after explorer John C. Fremont. Commerce City experienced significant growth during the late 19th century as a result of its location on one of two main wagon roads that connected Denver with Fort Collins and other west-central Colorado settlements. The railroads brought many new residents to town, including many capitalists interested in developing commerce within what were then boomtowns around Denver and Fort Collins. By 1900, Commerce City had become one of the largest towns in Weld County with over 25,000 residents. During World War II, Commerce City became an important center for munitions production due to its location at the edge of operations for Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Laboratory (RMA).RMA produced plutonium for use in nuclear weapons development through most of the Cold War era In October 2006 RMA announced plans to close its doors effective September 30th 2009 due to budget cuts which have impacted all national labs across America including RMA
