The area now called Commerce City was first settled by European Americans in 1859 when John Daltrey founded a town named after his brother James Daltrey in what is now southeastern Park County. In 1870, George Wickersham platted what became Commerce City on land he had purchased from Archibald MacLaren. The residents of early Commerce City voted to change their name to Commerce in 1875 in honor of Ulysses S. Grant, then president of the United States. In 1902, A&P Refrigeration opened its first store here and quickly became a major player in Commerce City's economy. The company continued to grow until it merged with Ralston Purina in 1967 to form Ralston-Purina Company USA Inc., which still operates an operating subsidiary here today as Ralston Purina Company LLC (RPP). A&P played an instrumental role in developing downtown Commerce City into one of Colorado's most vibrant commercial districts during much of its history - becoming one of only two companies ever to have both a physical store and headquarters within walking distance of each other across three blocks on Main Street between 6th and 7th Streets (the other being Pepsi Cola). Today you can find remnants of A&P's heyday all around downtown; from storefronts that once contained iconic signage such as "A & P All American" signs dating back to the 1920s up until recently hidden behind new restaurants or above Whole Foods Market building ballots; even pieces have been recovered from inside original buildings demolished for redevelopment purposes! However, there are also many newer businesses that have taken up space near old landmarks like Kipling Plaza and Union Station - providing another layer of retail diversity within this already highly competitive market!
