It is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood metropolitan area and is the county seat of Adams County. The first settler in what would become Commerce City was John Dickey in 1871. By 1882, there were nine businesses in the town square. In 1895, the first school opened in what is now downtown Commerce City. A courthouse and jail were built around 1900 and named after Harriman Fenton Cope, who donated land to commerce as well as $10,000 for both projects. The post office opened in 1907 and became known as "Fenton". In 1912, an oil refinery was built by Standard Oil Company on Holmes Creek west of town. The refinery produced gasoline and other fuels until it closed in 1973. A grain elevator also operated here until 1978 when it burned down due to arson. In 1957, Businessman Glen Beck bought a controlling interest in Anadarko Petroleum Corporation which later merged with Exxon Corporation to form Texaco Incorporated Texaco laid off most of its workforce at their new Fort Worth location before moving back into Commerce City where they continued operations until 1998 when they sold their entire business interests to Enbridge Pipeline Co.. That same year saw the opening of Comcast's corporate headquarters which remain operational today
