Commerce City is a resort town in southern Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 8,052 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Junction–Aurora Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by John Swayze and his brother-in-law James W. Thornton in 1876 as a small trading post on the banks of the White River. They named it Commerce because they were exploring new territory west of Denver when they first saw it and thought it would be an important trade center for goods moving east from Kansas into Oregon and California. The post office was established in 1877, and by 1880 commerce had reached its peak with over $1 million worth of goods being traded through the post annually. By 1902 there were only twenty residents living in Commerce City, but it continued to grow due to its location, access to water resources, and easy access to transportation including railroads that brought goods south to Denver or north to Fort Collins (the city's original commercial center). In 1924 Commerce City became an incorporated municipality with a full range of municipal powers including zoning ordinances, fire protection regulations, streetlights, water supplies and public works such as street paving and lighting. In 1969 Commerce City annexed part of neighboring Golden Valley which increased its population by 5%. Commerce City experienced a significant economic decline during the late 20th century due to competition from more developed communities such as Aurora and Fort Collins; however since the 1990s it has regained some lost ground thanks in particular to its location within easy reach of both Interstate 25and I-70 making it one of the most easily accessible cities in Western Colorado. As a result of this growth many factories closed down throughoutColorado during layoffs during recent times but have since reopened thanks to local economic development; for example Barnes & Noble relocated their headquarters from Ft Collins back into Commerce City after previously locating there prior to 2000

Commerce City is a small town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1879 by James W. Watt and his brother-in-law, George J. Nicolay as a railroad stop on the Southern Pacific Railroad. The name "Commerce" was chosen because of its location on a major trade route between eastern Canada and California. The town's first post office opened in 1881. Commerce City is located just east of Interstate 25 on U.S.-36 north of Interstate 70, making it easily accessible from both Denver and other parts of Colorado Springs and Keystone County. The current incarnation of Commerce City began to form after the opening of I-25 in 2002 when oil exploration began for nearby Anadarko Petroleum Corporation's Beltland Field within Weld County boundaries but no oil production occurred until 2007 when an underground well was drilled that produced 100 barrels/day from 2009 through 2013 according to state records; this production increased significantly with multiple wells drilled since then producing up to 800 barrels/day each through late 2015 according to Northern Colorado Oil & Gas Company LLC which also reports that production will resume early 2016 once work resumes on core drilling programs which were postponed due to tight budgets following sequestration cuts across all government services). By 2018 I-25 had been turned into an expressway cutting off much or all access to downtown commerce city reducing its economic vitality while bypassing it altogether (the only remaining access being via streets leading out west towards Aspen); this development coincided with demonstrations targeting Governor John Hickenlooper who had increased gas prices statewide effective January 1st 201
