In 1881, Colorado Springs was the home of a scientific society that organized the first international telescope exposition in America. The exposition was held at the University of Colorado and included an exhibition of new telescopes, demonstrations of optical principles by scientists from various countries, and a competition for best amateur telescopes. Theeventwas so successful that it was repeated in 1887 and 1893. By 1895, American astronomers had created a national astronomical survey organization called the National Astronomical Observatory (NAO). The NAO organized its first meeting in Denver in 1896 to discuss problems associated with observing Telescopes Across America. On July 12th, 1897, the NAO adopted a resolution designating October 8th as "National Optical Observations Day" in honor of American astronomers who have made significant discoveries during this period. He recommended that a southward extension be made through Strathmore Canyon east into southern Grant County so that railway passengers could travel directly to Mexico City instead of going through Aspen or Pueblo—a route then controlled by Apache Chief Manuel de la Mesilla y Costilla who had been hunting Mexican sheep on behalf of Spain since 1795. Construction began immediately upon Powell's recommendation and completed three years later, opening up what is now downtown Denver for trade with Mexico City and other parts of Latin America. In 1909, hotelier Andrew Carnegie funded construction of Monument Lakefront Drive between Belle Meade Boulevard and Lamar Boulevard (now called Post Road) after seeing an opportunity to develop land located across Cherry Creek from his original hotel site near today's Parker Ranch subdivision; this resulted in Centennial Hills which became home to many prominent Americans including Ulysses S. That same year also saw incorporation by charter amendment with name "Colorado Springs Municipal Corporation" which later became partServed by Mayor Tom Bradley The following year saw significant changes when anti-trust laws were passed although not enforced due to lack Of financial resources at that time; this led to development along Main Street west from Palace Park past University Blvd., intense speculation ensuing over control over valuable real estate until 1902 when it reverted back into public ownership . On July 1st 1903the town limits were expanded east 2 miles reaching Altadena Avenue Including much current Anschutz Medical Campus extending beyond today's north side boundaries
