The first European settlers arrived in what is now Colorado Springs on October 24, 1800 when brothers Pierre Dorion (1765–1831) and Jacques Marquette (1768–1848), both Frenchmen living in Canada landed on horseback at what is now known as Point Isabelle on the Uncompahgre Rivernear present day downtown Colorado Springs They named their new land “Arapaho” meaning “a place where there are many woods” after they found evidence that an ancient group had been living there for some time American fur trader David Thompson (1755–1827) visited the area in 1806 while exploring northwest corner of North America along with fellow fur trapper Simon Legazpi (1694–1757). He reports finding Indian villages east of today’s town limits but no evidence suggests they were ever lived in or around what is now central ColoSprings .
