The result was the “Kapp Gunsight” which remains in use today as one of NATO’s most common sighting systems for handguns and rifles across all conflicts worldwide. In 1819 Mexican General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna built Fort San Miguel at El Mirage west of today's downtown Denver. When Mexico became an independent country in 1821, our claim to these lands went with it - land that eventually formed present day Denver County and portions of Aurora and Fort Collins counties. On December 14th 1880 a group of men numbering 25 started out from Ft Riley on horseback laden with supplies for what would be their winter base at Alpine Meadows east of today's town center in Aspen Township just south of I-25 (now Globeville Boulevard). They called themselves "The Forty Thieves" because they had no idea where they were going or what their goal might be until they arrived at Deer Lodge Pass near Telluride National Forest headquarters on January 3rd 1881 after months hiking over badlands and through thick forests full ofasphodelums (a typeof lily) until finally reaching high ground about 10 miles above Aspen Lake whereupon they constructed a temporary cabin using sleighs pulled by horses/occasionally dogsledding over snow drifts up Montero Pass before continuing their journey downslope underpxerhaps5 miles wide all the way to Eagle Nest Lakeshore but only connected by two trails systemwide so travelers could not backtrack or take shortcuts like many other groups had done before them including those who found open water crossings during those first warm summer days thanks largely to easy access to...
