The city grew rapidly due to its location on Ulysses S Grant Boulevard which became known as "the Avenue of Opportunity." In 1920, Reginald Mellon donated land near present-day Hancock Park which became College Hill Park after he bought it from the original owner,. This donation allowed the University of Colorado at Boulder (UCO) to be established here in 1926 with statehood just two years later! Today, UCO offers over 200 programs leading up to professional degrees including law, medicine, engineering, business administration, education and health care! Colorado Springs continues its growth today as an international center for technology with numerous high-tech companies located here including Intel®, AMD®, Nvidia*, Microsoft*, Adobe Photoshop*, Apple iTunes* & Amazon Kindle*. Additionally, there are several thousand residents working in downtown businesses such as banks/credit unions/finance companies/ tech startups etc., making it one of America’s most vibrant cities!

It was during Polk's presidency that The Rocky Mountains were discovered by Ulysses S. Grant and in 1869, John Freemont organized a Mormon Battalion to explore these mountains for gold. In 1877, after becoming president of Mexico, Porfirio Diaz ordered the deportation of all Mexican Americans living in Colorado Springs. This event is known as the Demolition Day Raid.
