As a result of this battle and others that followed on what became known as the "Great Sioux War," General John Chivington decided to establish Fort Larimer on an abandoned prairie near present day Canon City (now south east corner of Interstate 25). As development moved westward across Kansas into present day Denver County, Fort Larimer came to be regarded as something more than just a military post; it became known as "the moral center of Weld County." Swiss immigrant Johann Baptiste de la Salle founded St Joseph's College (later called CU) here in 1796; he also constructed a sawmill on nearby Crystal Creek that still flourishes today. From its early days until passage of Geographic Names Act Amendments in 1938 which changed most US towns' names to descriptive terms such as "Colorado Springs" or "Aurora", St Joseph's College operated under both name and physical location - housed studentsuates along Main Street within easy reach of both buildings while classes were held outdoors in summer months... Today only traces remain: A single frame building remains standing on Main Street near where De La Salle had his college chapel built - now used for offices by St Joseph's College Historic Society... It wasn't until 1876 when James Hutton arrived from Great Britain with instructions to explore western Kansas that he set his sights upon what would eventually become Pikes Peak National Monument. On July 20th, 1876, Hutton reached Independence Lake along what is now I-25 before turning northeast onto what would become US Highway 1083 towards Pikes Peak Base Camp – less than four miles from where he later discovered mineralized water bubbling out from beneath an ancient volcano called Old Glacial Lake Agassiz... Hutton named this feature Mount Eldon after Rear Admiral Samuel Eliot Morison who had led HMS Beagle exploring Antarctica… Upon reaching summit base camp on December 6th 1876 following an arduous hike lasting over nine days with temperatures reaching over 100 degrees Fahrenheit (!), Hutton recorded his findings including mentioning "…this [Pikes Peak] peak has been without equal among mountains found anywhere upon our continent…" In 1840 Congress created Rocky Mountain National Park Service based at Ft Leavenworth Arsenal but Headquarters never relocated because there were no major rivers or mountain ranges within park boundaries! With increasing evidence supporting claims regarding gold existences along local creek beds throughout Weld County – culminating with excitement around reports emanating back East starting in 1849 – several men banded together under leaderships such asCaptain Edward Bridgwater(1814-92)and Capt Wiley Post(1793-1871) formed Gold Rush Mining Company which began extracting gold nuggets from Saguache Creek bed southwest of Lyons in January 1860.. By 1863 mining operations had ceased due to low grades but some 8 million dollars worth total was found during six years federal government efforts including purchase OF THE WEST COAST GOLD RUSH MINING COMPANY FROM KENTUCKY GOLD COALITION FOR $5 MILLION plus interest payable yearly !!! Today alluvial gold fields can be seen immediately adjacent northwest corner off I-25 between exits 5 & 6 mile marker just outside town limits
