Colorado Springs ( incorporated in 1931) is a city in Colorado, United States. The population was 997 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver–Aurora-Lakewood, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area and is located on the southern edge of the Front Range of Rocky Mountain National Park. The first permanent European settlement in what is now Colorado Springs was made by Andrew Jackson during his 1824 Expedition along what is now I-25. Jackson's men constructed Fort Pierre on Arkansas River near present day Colorado Springs. The fort served as a trading post for local Native Americans and later as a military base under Ulysses S. Grant during the Mexican–American War and Reconstruction Era; it was abandoned after the war ended. In 1876, gold seekers prospecting for gold in western Colorado discovered strikes that would become one of the most important sources of revenue for both state and federal governments for decades to come. In 1878, Kansan James Wickersham established himself at Wickenburg Creek about 20 miles northwest of what is today Colorado Springs with Camp Mather to mine silver coins from adzuki beans grown there by Native American workers under Wickersham's supervision. By 1880, he had moved his operation 1 mile northeast to Silver City where he began producing more than $1 million worth of silver coins each year before abandoning Silver City in 1886 due to depletion of resources and competition from other miners. After years of investigation, Congress passed legislation on July 16, 1906 establishing an agency called "The Financial Institutions Oversight Agency" or "FIA". On October 15, 1907, President Theodore Roosevelt established Arapaho Indian School (later renamed White Sands Apache School), which became one of America's leading private schools for Native students. Arapaho Indian School closed its doors following World War II but reopened as Southwestern Federal Military High School in 1954. In 1962 303rd Infantry Regiment activated here becoming 3rd Brigade Combat Team El Paso Division. On November 17th 1959 US Air Force Base Andrews opened with 4 bases including nearby Peterson AFB which hosted Tactical Air Command until it was transferred to CONUS AF on March 12th 1960 also adding auxiliary airfields like Roswell AFB New Mexico which host USAF bomber aircraft currently. The city saw its share though no active hostilities took place until September 11th 2001 when terrorists attacked USA airports resulting into over 3000 injuries & deaths however all events since have been peaceful without any attacks taking place
