The first European settlers arrived in what is now Colorado Springs in 1859, when James Hutton established himself as an entrepreneur and fur trader on the Santa Fe Trail. In 1872, General George Armstrong Custer fought his last battle at Fort Donelson near present-day Colorado Springs. After his death, General Ulysses S Grant donated land to become Fort Carson National Military Park in honor of Custer's loss and also to remember all who had served within the Union during the Civil War. The park includes dozens of buildings from both sides of history including Fort Donelson National Monument which was destroyed by a fire in 1974; it has been reconstructed as a visitor center with exhibits about both military campaigns and historical events around town while still remaining an active military base today In 1875, El Paso County was created from portions of Montrose County east of Interstate 25 (the original county boundaries). As part of this annexation process, one small community – "Colorado City" – became part of El Paso County but remained municipally independent until 1912 when its own charter was adopted which granted it full municipal powers similar to those enjoyed by other municipalities within El Paso County On November 15th 1915 voters approved passage by referendum Amendment 1 to the City Charter granting citizenship to "Colorado City" for an initial period no longer than ten years This amendment specified that “The residents thereof shall be subject only to El Paso County authorities” On November 30th 1919 voters passed Amendment 2 giving full municipal powers to "Colorado City". The new charter provided that “The municipality may contract with any political subdivision or agency thereof for any public works whatsoever … without giving prior notice or hearing” This amendment represented an early example of self-governance by cities through their local governments Today there are over 100 businesses operating out of Town Hall Square downtown including restaurants such as Zuka Burgers & Fries (renowned for its burgers), Pizza hut, Subway sandwiches and Dunkin' Donuts . There are also several shopping malls located throughout town such as Mallory Square Shopping Center (), Stadium Village (), Greenwood Village () and Westminster (). Downtown groceries include Sprouts Farmers Market (), Albertsons () and Kroger (). There are also several parks scattered throughout town including Golden Gate Park (), Northglenn Lake Recreation Area (), Kipling Hills Recreational Area () and Stratford Recreation Area (). Finally there is Creekside Park just northeast of downtown where people can enjoy nature hikes/rides/playdates etc

Today's skyline includesOver one million square feet (1002 m2) of commercial space along 7 blocks of Main Street between Old Market Street and First Avenue South; 5 large office buildings (One New York Plaza, One Chase Tower, One Metropolitan Life Building, One Wells Fargo Center); more than 100 smaller businesses; over 50 public parks; several thousand residences; plus a number of small businesses providing services such as dog walking/feeding/repairing bicycles/lawn care/pet sitting The history of Colorado Springs begins with its founding in 1876 when George Armstrong Custer led his United States Cavalry Regiment into battle against Mexican forces at what is now known as Battle Mountain Pass near present-day Denverites would remember this day for quite some time because General Custer's remains were never recovered! Prior to that fateful day there was also skirmish fought at Pikes Peak which took place about three miles east from today's town center around what is now known as Gardner Ridge! Despite losing many men during this engagement General Custers unit continued westward until they reached Bozeman where they camped for two nights before setting out again tomorrow morning on their way back to Fort Carson! Unfortunately not all members did make it back alive however photographs taken during that period still show proud American Cavalrymen raising hell as they prepare to invade Mexico!!!! This event started what would eventually become one of America's fastest growing cities with people flocking here from all over Missouri just to be part of something so important! On April 6th 1876 land prices began rising rapidly due mostly to population growth caused by military activity+railroads+gold discoveries in nearby counties piney woods region etc etc...The first store in town opened up on 3rd Ave S frontoader Mrs Fenton who had already been selling goods from her home since Tuesday night!!!Today we still have places like that open up where people usedto buy groceries fresh or whatever back then lol
