Colorado Springs, Colorado is a city in the Rocky Mountains of Western Colorado, United States. Situated on the San Miguel River, it is the county seat of El Paso County and home to The University of Colorado at Boulder. As of 2015, the population was 651,060. The first European settlement in what would become Colorado Springs was made by prospectors led by James Hutton in 1859. By 1865, some 10 miles (16 km) east of present-day downtown Colorado Springs, John Wesley Powell had discovered two large copper mines in Arapaho Creek District and named them "Powell's Peak" after himself and his exploratory team. In 1872–73, surveyor George Washington Carleton erected a small post near where Denver now stands as an observation post for wagon trains headed westward overblemptioned by the great Rockies. In 1882-1883, organized mining began with numerous claims being staked around present-day Flagstaff and Golden areas; however due to strikes by union miners about wages and working conditions among other things – including open fires – this early mining activity primarily took place within El Paso County. It wasn’t until 1886 when a company known as The Phelps Dodge Company became interested in developing coal seams just south east of town on San Miguel River valley flooring which they eventually named “Norfolk” after their president Hiram Newport Phelps who personally provided financial backing for the venture along with banker William Overton Norris (who also donated land). Held from 1886 until 1912 because gold Fever struck much of America during that time period making transportation difficult or impossible for most people outside West Coasters( subsequent discoveries have since solved this problem), various events marking important milestones connected to early Colo-Springs include: First day light shown at Pikes Peak Station on September 16th 1887; first train service between Denver & Central City Junction on October 3rd 1888; first balloon ascent from Elmira Summit at 8pm local time July 26th 1889; opening ceremonies for New Mexico State Capitol building were held August 21st 1890 under auspices of Territorial Governor John Chivington First class mail service between Albuquerque & Santa Fe was inaugurated November 15th 1895 using a horse drawn wagon hauled by four men en route from Albuquerque overland through Roswell NM then upriver to Fort Stanton AZ then downriver into Santa Fe via Española Pass During these years well wishers could drop off flowers or candy at various stops along route while onlookers enjoyed excellent views looking out onto Trinidad Valley below including today’s Airport located adjacent to old Town Hall Site where previous US Post Office operated from 1911-1984
