In 1912, Centennial became an incorporated town with a population of 12,000 people. In 1925, it became a city with a population of 30,000 people. Centennial has experienced many changes throughout its history. In 1896 it was one of only two communities in Colorado to be granted annexation by Denver City limits; the other being Aurora. The first post office at Centennial was established in 1876 and served until 1880 when it was moved to Auraria which continued to serve as its main mailing address until 1907 when it changed to Centennial. In 1912 Centennial became an incorporated town with a population of 12,000 people under the name "Centerville". That year also saw the erection of the first municipal building which still stands today - this building is currently used as the library/centerspace for Centerville High School (now known as Cherry Creek High School). The early 20th century saw growth in both industry and commerce thanks to new transportation methods such as automobiles and railroads which made goods available from all over America much more quickly than ever before. This growth led to increased development around Centerville including housing developments such as Highland Park (1914), Crested Butte (1920), Central Park (1925) and Vista Ridge (1928).
