The Centennial Shooting Association was founded in 1921 as the Rocky Mountain Rifle and Pistol Club. The original purpose of the association was to promote rifle hunting in the Centennial area, but over time it has evolved into a more general shooting organization. Today, there are several hundred members who participate in shoots throughout Centennial. Many of these shooters hail from out-of-state, coming to shoot at local ranges during their stay in town. There is also an annual Midwinter Shoot which takes place at Pikes Peak Regional Park outdoors on New Year's Day. Centennial, Colorado is a town located in El Paso County, Colorado, United States. The population was 3,890 at the 2010 census. Centennial is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood Metropolitan Statistical Area. Centennial was founded on July 4, 1876 by land grantees of President Ulysses S. Grant and named for him. The first settlers arrived from Illinois in 1875 and platted what would become Centennial in 1877. The post office was established in 1880 and remained open until 1907. In 1902, Centennial became the seat of El Paso County when it was organized from parts of Arapahoe and Park counties. The townsite had been surveyed in 1865 by Jens Moller Rasmussen as part of a large ranch grant to Major General George Armstrong Custer that he had won during the Mexican–American War (1846–48). In 1907, Centennial added its own water filtration plant to its utilities system while also starting an electric company with two transmission lines connecting Denver to Auraria and Golden CO., as well as providing service to other communities within El Paso County. By 1931, Centennial had become one of the most developed small towns in western Colorado with a variety of businesses along Main Street including banks (First National Bank & Trust Company; Citizens National Bank) churches (Calvary Methodist Episcopal Church; First Baptist Church), schools (Centenary Intermediate School; Centenary High School), hotels (Colorado Springs Hotel Company; Presidents Inn), doctor's offices (Drury Clinic & Painters Inc.), grocery stores (Granada Grocery Stores Inc.; Smith's Drug Store), department stores (Jiffy Lube Company; Sears Roebuck & Co.) and several breweries including Grand Mesa Brewing Company which later became Anschutz Brewery Inc., now known as Goldfinger Brewing Company LLC. On September 26th, 1950 Centennials first fire department arrived on scene after being called to help extinguish a burning tire on I-70 near milepost 287 eastbound just before 5 p.m.. By 1951 complete fire suppression equipment had been purchased along with new firefighters uniforms which allowed for more incidents like this without having to call for backup again so soon afterward
