Centennial is a town in Arapahoe County, Colorado, United States. The population was 3,977 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Aurora–Centennial–Lakewood Metropolitan Statistical Area. The townsite was laid out by George Custer during the Gold Rush in 1859 and named for him. The first post office in Centennial was established on July 1, 1860, and operated until it closed on October 15, 1880. The current post office was established on February 28, 1886. Aurora's rich history begins with settlers arriving from Illinois in 1875 to start what would become Aurora Borealis Electric Light Company; they were followed by other entrepreneurs such as Arthur Eldredge who founded Denver Gas Light Company and John Wesley Hammons who founded the Colorado Fuel & Iron Corporation. When the American Civil War began in 1861, Centennial became a wagon stop because no one could find enough horses to haul goods all the way to Denver so he put up a sign that read "Wagon Stop Centennial". In 1865 when Denver incorporated as a city, it appointed Hiram Sibley as its first mayor and Centennial became home to his City Hall where Sibley spent his entire mayoral career (1865-1893). In 1892 an act called "An Act To Establish A Cotton Mill In Aurora" was passed which allowed Forgan Bros., manufacturers of cotton candy products in Aurora (now known as Nestle) to build a mill here without having to get government permission or go through overly expensive process of getting land from federal government officials - something unheard of at that time! This event helped spur industrial growth throughout western Colorado especially around Aurora where mills turned out everything from flour to candy bars! Business boomed and many people came here because there wasn't anything else close by! The mill continued operations until 1912 when it went out of business due to prohibition laws which made cotton impossible for companies like Forgan Bros. To continue making their product they had to find another way so businesses started closing down all over eastern Colorado instead! By 1916 there weren't any mills left within 100 miles of Indianapolis so production stopped completely! However this didn't mean that Aurorans couldn't still enjoy their favorite type of candy: cotton candy! Starting in 1919 some people decided that since prohibition had ended we should have a annually rotating parade honoring our heroes from prohibition including Buffalo Bills linebacker Billy Kilmer who died after being shot by prohibition agents during the parade... things got pretty interesting!! Finally effectiveantle Prohibition repealed following Franklin D Roosevelt's election as president in 1933 which reopened factories across eastern Colorado along with much needed jobs!!! After more than 40 years without industry centering near us again Aurorans woke up one morning and saw construction going on next door...it was time for yet another new era starting with today’s Centennial community!!!

Polk appointed Kansas Territorial Governor John Hance to serve as Acting President until territorial officials could be elected under new rules set by Congress; meanwhile, Utah Territory was admitted into the Union as part of Arizona Territory; New Mexico Territory acquired land east of Rio Grande River; and Oregon Territory gained territory west of Lake Superior from Minnesota Territory
On July 2, 1876, Centennial was founded as a Methodist town in Weld County by soldiers from the Mexican-American War. The town grew rapidly and in 1883 it became an organized municipality with its own government. In 1907 Centennial was merged into the larger city of Greeley.
