The lack of economic opportunity due to prohibition and other factors helped contribute to Centennial's transformation into an agricultural community during Prohibition era – with many residents working as farmers or ranch hands while others became merchants or night watchmen on local trains running between Pueblo and Silverton serving mining communities along the way. In recent decades, some restoration has occurred such as reopening of The Old Mill Museum which served as a grain elevator for many years before being converted into an agricultural museum open to the public starting in 1984; also new development has taken place including a new Walmart store which opened in 2006 across from The Old Mill Museum making Centennial one of the most developed small towns in San Miguel County.

Centennial is a town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,815 at the 2010 census. The name "Centennial" was chosen by the Centennial Committee in 1968 to commemorate the centenary of Colorado's admission as a state. The first settler in what is now Centennial was Daniel Boone on July 22, 1827. Centennial had its official incorporation on Valentine's Day of 1887. The original town site lay east of modern-day Centennial and north of Aspen Springs. Centennial became an incorporated municipality on December 12, 1890. In 1907, gold was discovered near Telluride and local miners quickly developed a mining camp there called Telluride Springs; this led to increased development around the springs until 1939 when production stopped because of World War II restrictions on mining outside war zones. In 1941, during World War IIZABA (the American Battlefront Army), Ft Chaffee built Camp Hale which served as headquarters for the 5th Infantry Division while it moved through Utah and Arizona into New Mexico Territory under General Joe Ralston’s command to participate in Operation Market Garden; afterward many soldiers and their families returned home from that deployment and Hayden Field reopened as a recreational center for troops returning home later that year as well as hosting numerous dances at night by arena personnel while they awaited their discharge from service under GI Bill benefits.
