When Colorado became a state in 1876, the territory was divided into counties. The first county to be created was Centennial County. It was named for the centennial of the United States Declaration of Independence and it included most of modern-day Centennial County as well as parts of Asotin, Arapahoe, Douglas, Gunnison, Jefferson, Pueblo and San Miguel counties. In 1912, Centennial Colorado became the first state in the United States to allow handgun possession by civilians. In 1934, the National Firearms Act (NFA) was passed which regulated and limited gun ownership in the US. The act also allowed for the creation of special tax exemptions for firearms retailers. In 1968, Amendment II to the Colorado Constitution legalized concealed carry without a permit. This amendment allows citizens with Concealed Carry permits to openly carry handguns on their person as long as they are not carrying any other weapons or ammunition. In 2009, Amendment III to the Colorado Constitution was ratified which legalized open carry of handguns statewide with no requirement of a permit or training.
Centennial, Colorado was founded on July 1, 1876. Centennial is a town in San Miguel County, Colorado and has a population of over 10,000 residents. The community is located in the Rocky Mountains and lies at an elevation of 4500 feet (1350 meters). Centennial is the largest city in San Miguel County and the county seat of San Miguel County. The first post office opened in Centennial on October 15, 1875. The present day town was platted by Lieutenant Colonel J.M. Gregg who named it after his birthplace of Cincinnati, Ohio - Chesterfield Township. The first settlers to arrive in what is now Centennial were men from New York City and Pennsylvania who came overland during the winter of 1865-66. They traveled through Utah Territory before reaching what is now San Miguel County on March 10, 1867. A group of farmers from Denver organized a wagon train to transport goods from that city to Pueblo de las Animas near Casa Grande on April 26th; this event marks the beginning of ranching activity in what would become Centenary. In 1880 Charles Hargrave organized a company for irrigation purposes which marked the beginning of heavy farming activity in what would become Centennial. Many important events occurred during this time including: On December 12th 1886 Captain John Sibley led a party across US 25 north into central Colorado while under cover of darkness to explore new land that lay westward beyond Fort Collins; they discovered mineral rights which led to Rancho Estanco being granted by Governor Hiram Hastings on January 7th, 1887 In 1889 or 1890 George Noyes became involved with mining operations when he purchased silver ore from Comanche Indians east of Trinidad Pass along US 25 near Red Rocks about 9 miles south-southeast of present day downtown; this operation transformed Noyes & Sons into one of Denver’s leadingmining firms………………………………………..continued………………….

Centennial Colo. History starts with the first permanent European settlement in what is now Centennial County, Colorado on July 24, 1876. The site was a small ranch near Pueblo which was being used as a military base for the U.S. Army. A group of men led by Captain James Hutton and Lt. John Custer set out from Fort Collins to explore the area and found a dry creek bed that would provide water for their cattle and Provide them with food while they travelled through this harsh country. It wasn't until November 1876 when they made it to the present day town of Centennial where they established a trading post called "Hutton's Trading Post." The location of Centennial today is due to an event that took place on October 16, 1912 when Denver Mayor George Norris proposed annexing Centennial County into Denver City Limits which were then approved by voters in a referendum on November 3rd. Since its inception as a county, Centennial has seen significant growth including: -The creation of two municipalities; Pueblo and Golden Hill -The construction of four adjacent interstate highways; I-70, I-25, I-76 and II-25 -A population increase from 442 in 1990 to 730 in 2010 Centennial has also experienced significant changes within itself such as; the annexation of much smaller communities such as Easton (1993), Durango (1998), Telluride (2000) and Park City (2002). In spite of these challenges, over the years more than $10 million has been invested into local infrastructure projects alone making Centennial one of Colorado’s most thriving counties
