Centennial is part of the Pueblo–La Plata Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Centennial were the Hidatsa and Arapaho. In 1876, a group of settlers from Illinois led by James Wickersham founded an agricultural community called Wickenburg in present-day Kaweah County. They named their new community after General Ulysses S. Grant's home state of Illinois, which they expected to be America's next territories when silver was discovered in that area. However, no new territory was acquired and Grant's party disbanded in 1877 due to financial difficulties; they returned to Springfield two years later without any equipment or livestock and abandoned all their possessions there. In 1879, John Wesley Powell became US Consul-General at Albuquerque and decided that Pueblo would be his new headquarters for his Division of Western Public Instruction (DWP). He recommended that the DWP build a school in Pueblo so that students could learn about American democracy and culture before traveling westward into Apache country where gold was being found. Construction began on the school's first building on the present-day corner of First Street and Broadway Avenue in 1880 but soon bogged down with construction expenses associated with annexing surrounding communities including Wickenburg (which becameCentennial), El Paso (now El Paso County), Pine Creek (now Coryell County), as well as White Sands National Monument east of Aspen on New Mexico Territory side: these additions increased its size from 10 acres (4 ha) to 120 acres (48 ha) over nine months while also increasing costs by $5 million dollars ($ today).
