The population of Aurora increased rapidly during World War I because of military recruitment efforts; however, when war ended in 1918 there were few jobs available for veterans so they returned home early and small numbers continued to live in Aurora until 1940 when annexation of Lakewood made it an entirely new municipality again with its own government During this time there were numerous cultural changes taking place in downtown Aurora such as the opening of the first movie theater west of Interstate 25 (the Pioneer Theatre) in 1922 and also art galleries including The Great Western Gallery which opened in 1924 Aurora lost much significance after becoming an annexee during World War II but regained some importance following Expo 'Nam when many businesses relocated from Denver to Aurora In 1990s there was significant growth within downtown Aurora due to development around First Avenue South between Cherry Street and Central Park Drive known as "The Renaissance".
