The original plat for Centennial was filed with the US government on July 12, 1876. Centennial was named after the centenary anniversary of England's incorporation as a republic, which took place July 24, 1876. The first post office in Centennial was established in 1880 and served until 1907. The first GPO in Centennial was established on October 15, 1888 and served until May 1, 1915; it remained an mail service until it merged with the Denver Post Office on January 1, 1923. In 1916–1917 Centennial erected a frame courthouse which replaced an earlier wooden structure that had been destroyed by fire several years prior. The new courthouse became operational on October 15th 1917 and lasted until 1951 when it was replaced by the current building which still stands today (see photo). On June 25th 1912 Clyde Meeks set up his own grocery store at what is now known as Olde Towne Centre across from Central High School (now known as Keystone Middle School). This store would be one of the most important stores in early Centennials history because it carried groceries for local farmers while also selling goods to shoppers throughout downtown Denver; thisstore would remain open into the 1990s although some windows were smashed over time due to vandalism inside/outsideof store-owned property rather then theft or looting outside business properties like Clyde Meeks' store did long ago!
