Centennial, Colorado is a town located in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 3,898 at the 2010 census. Centennial's history dates back to 1876 when it was founded as a small settlement on the Little San Gorgonio River. In 1907 the town accepted annexation by Fort Collins and became part of that city. It experienced significant growth during World War II as the home of Fort Carson Army Depot and other munitions production facilities. The economy revived in the late 1990s following enactment of statewide fracking bans and the opening of several new retail stores in Centennial. Since 2000, Centennial has seen an increase in development with two major projects slated for completion this year: The $135 million Pueblo West mixed-use redevelopment project and a $30 million-$40 million lightrail system expansion project. The first mention of Centennial comes from Hernando de Soto who passed through this area on his way southward to Chihuahua in 1542. He noted that there was "a vilakula (village) named Canela" near where today's Centennial stands; he also mentioned some large mountains called San Gorgonio which he thought may be peak or peaklike objects like those currently located in Rocky Mountains National Park. Spanish explorers visited this area soon thereafter and discovered both its rich soil with lots of oilseed plants and its numerous waterholes; they also named one of these waterholes San Lorenzo de las Animas (the location later became known as Centeno). In 1876, Centennial was the centennial of Colorado's admission to the United States. The event took place on July 4 and was attended by state legislators, business people, and others. Celebrations continued for many years afterwards.
