The first settler in what is now Castle Rock was John Hargrave in 1876. He and his wife, Virginia (née Smith), made their home on a high bluff overlooking the Gunnison River. In 1890, they moved to their present location and beganenosizing the land around them; by 1912 it had become a town. The history of Castle Rock can be traced back to its early days as an agricultural community; during prohibition years in 1919 and 1920, local farmers exported grain from their mills to satisfy demand for prohibition-legal product throughout much of America. In 1951, when Colorado became one of six American states that allowed gambling (the others being New Jersey, Nevada, Oregon, Rhode Island and Washington), Castle Rock became one of the first communities in the state to establish itself as a gaming center with two casinos: Fiesta Ballroom and Gold Rush Casino Corporation. At that time there were only scattered rural settlements across Colorado Springs and Aurora; together they constituted what is now considered Rocky Mountain gambling country due to its mountainous terrain which limited play opportunities outside major cities or resort areas such as Aspen or Denver. However over time all but one casino closed down either because of lack of interest or competition from more recent arrivals such as Greyhound Bus Lines’s new operations at IMAX Stadium/MGM Grand near downtown Denver - both venues sharing downtown skyline views with casinos able to easily dominate any skylinescape shots taken from within those buildings without obscuring other structures within those boundaries - while still retaining significant amounts of revenue for those proprietors who managed these properties profitably well enough through auctions held every few months or so at “the little old store on Main Street” where bids could amount up to $50 per slot machine handle plus handling fees associated with each particular game type offered (elegant art deco fixtures graced many surfaces inside these premises during this time period).
