Castle Rock is a small town in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. It was founded in 1876 by millionaire John Castle and his wife, Anna. The first gun shop in town was opened in 1886. In 1923, CastleRock hosted the world's first international air rifle exhibition at the new castle-owned Air Force Academy. The gun industry has had a significant impact on CastleRock over the years. The first commercial pistols were made here in 1892 and the only machine guns used until World War II were mounted on M1911s and other armories' rifles. Today, CastleRock is home to one of the largest handgun retailers in North America, G&G Gun Emporium, as well as two shotgun stores (one within walking distance of each other), an ammunition store, a rifle range (including an indoor 10-meter shooting range), and 14 golf courses serving both residents and visitors from all over the United States. CastleRock also hosts several annual events such as its own Christmas tree ornaments show each year, which draws some of Colorado's top talent for music, theater, dance and advertising; its Annual Farmers Market; its Craft Show featuring local artisans; its Fourth of July fireworks displays; and its popular "Gun Faire."

Castle Rock, Colorado is a small town in the eastern Rocky Mountains. The population was 1,874 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Collins–Aurora, CO metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now Castle Rock was George Washington Carver. He and his wife, Lillie Wright, arrived in 1875 from Illinois and built a cabin on a ridge overlooking the confluence of Clear Creek and Canon Creek. In 1886, they moved to a more permanent cabin on Prospect Hill which they still live in today. In 1888, Carver met Alice Paul who would later become an American author and politician. They married in 1889 and she remained living with him until her death in 1948. The town started as a collection of log cabins scattered around Prospect Hill during the early 19th century when prospectors began looking for gold near the headwaters of Clear Creek. By 1892 there were 10 buildings including two stores and one hotel within walking distance of each other. Development accelerated after gold was found in 1893 by Jim Bridger and others working for Northern Pacific Railway (NRA) under then-President Grover Cleveland’s leadership; this opened up new opportunities for mining, trade, tourism and farming around Castle Rock center dating back to long before its incorporation as a municipality on November 6, 1896. The population grew rapidly due to new investments by both developers and residents alike as well as natural expansion across Clear Creek that followed following discovery of additional deposits at nearby Kinney Ranch (now Telluride). But despite this growth Hardship seemed inevitable due to scarce water resourcesavailability especially during dry periods leading to street flooding which frequently destroyed property along Main Street between 1863rd & 1865th Streets between 1890 & 1915 inclusive; resulting eventually in loss or forfeiture of ownership/use rights subjecting citizens thereto thereby gaining title inverse thereof with notice being given wherein compensation could be claimed should such losses exceed $500 per family per year ($2,500 Today). This led ultimately to incorporation of Forest Park Township adjacent thereto effective February 5th 1911 notwithstanding repeated efforts by Mayor John CavanaughGrendel(1911-1920)to have it repealed only to be successful again upon election successof Harry DunhamGarland(1920-1924), commencing hereinforth chronicled hereinbelow under incipient name ‘CastleRock Municipality’ prior thereto called simply ‘CastleRock’ even though continuing appropriations therein continued unabated until forced cessation pursuant to §4-5-108 Statutes Of Colorado Annotated 1976 subsequent thereto.) It is located on the western edge of the mountain range that separates central Rocky Mountains from the eastern Rockies. The first European to visit Castle Rock was Captain John Smith in 1609, who named it Fort Smith after his home town in Virginia. In 1876, while surveying a new route for the Union Pacific Railroad through Douglas County, General George Armstrong Custer happened upon this location and decided to camp there for the winter. His men built a cabin and called it "Custer's Camp". The site became known as "Castle Rock" because of its resemblance to a castle. In 1886 Castle Rock became an incorporated city and quickly became one of Colorado's leading agricultural towns. After World War II it experienced rapid growth as people moved into its close-knit community for jobs in nearby Denver and Carbondale. However, during the late 1990s economic recession CastleRock began experiencing declines in population and revenue due to increased competition from larger communities within easy driving distance of its residents. Today only about half of the original buildings remain standing in what has been dubbed "the ghost town."
