Castle Rock is located in the southeastern corner of Colorado, on the banks of the Arkansas River. The town was founded in 1864 by prospectors following the discovery of a salt mine at Castle Rock Hill. The population doubled in less than a decade and soon became known for its rifle scopes, which were used to target practice and hunting game. In 1895, Castle Rock began offering courses in rifle shooting through the auspices of the Rocky Mountain Rifle Association (RMA). Today, Castle Rock offers instruction in all aspects of rifle shooting including basic mechanics, opticsmology, NRA-approved mounts and accessories, tactical reloading, hunter safety tips and more. The RMA has been instrumental in helping to preserve CastleRock's history and contribute to its cultural significance. For example, they have developed an award program honoring local Shooters Clubs that demonstrate innovation or excellence when it comes to firearms training and Shooting Sportsmanship. In addition to this important distinction, members of RMA are also awarded special recognition at various events throughout the year such as state fairs or NRA Annual Meetings. Today there are many people who live and work within Castle Rock who owe their livelihoods to NRA membership or shooters clubs like theirs. Castle Rock is a small town in northeastern Colorado, United States. The population was 1,858 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver-Aurora Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to set eyes on what is now Castle Rock was Captain James Cook on his second voyage around the world in 1778. He named it "Rocky Mountain" after a nearby peak and sailed past it without noticing its potential importance as a trading post or military base. In 1812, when Mexico gained independence from Spain, General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna called Castle Rock "the keystone of our chain". To keep Mexico from gaining access to this strategically important location, Santa Anna ordered the construction of an impregnable fortification on the site that continues to serve as a garrison today. The fortifications were completed in 1825 and became known as Fort Rocky Mount. In 1870, Castle Rock began to be developed into a small farming community with sawmills and other small businesses located near the center of town while larger farms extended outwards towards Vail and Aspen. In 1915, when Colorado became an all-new state, Castle Rock voted to become its capital and remained so until 1935 when Denver became the state's official capital. From 1935 until 1951, Castlegar served as both Capital City (or Transthoracene) for Colorado and concurrently as Capital Township due to its size compared to other townships in the state. From 1951 until 1957 it served as Capital City once again but remaining unincorporated within that city limits due to municipal boundaries changes which merged most of westernColorado into Denver proper including Castlegar Township which continued unchanged within that city limits despite its size increase making it one of only two townships still unincorporated withinDenver proper (the other being Greenwood Village). CastleRock has been incorporated into Denver since then although remains unincorporated outside thereof again having lost much of its agricultural production over time with annexation by neighbouring municipalities such as Aurora and Westminster making up most recent growth in area outside those tightly contained borders
