Castle Rock is a small town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,282 at the 2010 census. Castle Rock is located on the south side of the San Miguel River, east of Greeley. It is named for Fort Larimer (later Fort Collins), which was built in 1795 by Spanish settlers as part of the expedition to establish Colorado as a Mexican territory. The fort served as a military post and trading post until 1855 when it became an arsenal used by Mexico during their war with America. In 1876, John Anson Cooke bought Rancho San Miguel from Francisco Armijo and began developing it into a large ranch including land for farming, cattle grazing, timber production and mining. In 1886 he married Emma Lillian Dodge; they had six children: two girls and four boys. They also founded the first Methodist church in Weld County (1889). The Cooke family operated Rancho San Miguel until 1918 when they sold it to JC Penney who renamed it Castle Rock because of its resemblance to Rocky Mountain peaks seen from their home town near Denver. Penney continued to operate it until his death in 1957; ownership then passed through several families before finally being given to the National Park Service in 1966.
