Castle Rock is located in the San Juan County of Colorado and it was founded on July 15, 1864. The town was named after Fort Castle Rock, which was built in 1855 by U.S. Army General James K. Polk to help protect the frontier from Mexican raiders. The fort helped to drive out Mexican settlers and troops from the area, and it also served as a prison for criminals and outlaws during the late 19th century. Today, Castle Rock is a small community with a population of around 100 people, most of whom are retirees or students who frequent the local libraries and schools. Many residents still refer to themselves as “ Holsters” because they have been here since before holster licensing became required in Colorado in 1931. The first holsters were designed for use with revolvers (the three-inch Beretta Model 1911 being the most popular). By 1865, however, many citizens had started carrying handguns for protection purposes outside of their homes or businesses. In that year, CastleRock began issuing its own holster licenses to individuals who wanted to carry firearms inside their homes or businesses. The first people to live in Castle Rock were the Ute Indian tribe. They made their home on the bluffs overlooking Clear Creek and White River. The name "Castle Rock" was given to them by General John Custer as a response to their request for protection from white settlers who wanted to cross Clear Creek and settle in what is now Castle Rock Township. In 1872, gold miners discovered strikes near present-day Castle Rock and began trading goods with local Native Americans. In 1884, the company that had been mining gold near where Castle Rock now stands organized itself into a company town called Goshen (named after its original place of incorporation). The town built a courthouse, jail and other buildings; but it did not have any residents until November 1886 when four men from Utah arrived in Goshen looking for gold and started building a small fort on State Road 11 which led east out of town. On October 3rd 1889, Mormon missionaries named Brigham Young Jr., Parley P Saintsbury and George Q Cannon set out from Salt Lake City on horseback for what would be their final journey across North America – they were goingto found an independent church in Central AmericaThe group reached South Pass about 27 miles (43 km) north of Fort Bridger on July 12th 1892 when they lost power steering due to bad weather conditions; however, they persevered until reaching civilization again on July 15th after spending three days walking 255 miles (400 km) over snowcovered mountains
