Castle Rock is a small town in the US state of Colorado. It is located on the edge of the Rocky Mountains, about 10 miles south of Golden and about 25 miles north of Fort Collins. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. The first people to live in what is now Castle Rock were Native Americans who called it Taos Pueblo. In 1847, General Hugh Egan founded Fort Hays in what is now Castle Rock and naming it after his friend and ally, General George Armstrong Custer. In 1868, fortifications were built around what are now Castle Rock and Leadville as part of the First Rocky Mountain Expedition led by Lieutenant Colonel John Custer to explore the new country west of Denver. The expedition's commander, Lt. Col.—later General—George Armstrong Custer assumed command of the force that arrived at Castle Rock on July 20th 1870. On November 6th 1870, Indian Wars began when Black Hawk attacked a detachment under Captain Royall at Rifle Hill east of present day CastleRock Road NW. After 3 days' battle with 4 warriors killed (including Black Hawk), Capt’n Royall retreated back upgradient to safety but casualties ran high among his men so Maj’t Hunt ordered all available artillery to bombard Black Hawk's position from positions overlooking Rifle Hill for an additional 5 hours that evening without result–thus causing an American victory over Native American forces for which no rewards were given until 1886 when Major James Haggard claimed credit for such an attack during Mexican-American War propaganda campaigns against Mexico City newspapers claiming United States military successes notwithstanding these failures). A post office was established at Castlegar in 1876; the name changed to CastleRock in 1907 because corn prices had dropped so low that mail could not be delivered safely from Dodge City or other eastern towns receiving mail via Stagecoach routes through Kansas because there was no railroad facilities nearby connecting those towns with Denver or Telluride; however postcards continue to be sent from Castlegar until today using that name even though residents have adopted other names such as Hogback Mesa due to increasing competition from other small towns throughout western CO.) In 1907, local entrepreneur Wm Haskell Weiser developed a coal mine at Hogback Mesa which yielded more than $1 million worth of coal since its opening in 1906! A menagerie consisting of ninety lions (ten grown), two hundred tigers (twenty-six born), one hundred bears (forty-eight adults), one hundred capuchin monkeys (eleven adults) was exhibited at Rocky Hill Agricultural Fairgrounds between 1889 and 1903 . From 1905 through 1912 it was located at Fort Lyon Army Depot before moving back to Rocky Hill . It reopened at Fort Lyon during World War I In 1933–1934 it housed American Expeditionary Forces military personnel stationed overseas aboard USS "Tribune" () during World War II before returning home again . On October 1st 1934 (), CastleRock became an incorporated town with incorporation ceremonies held by Mayor Edward Coyle (). Mrs. Fenton English served as mayor pro tem for three years until her retirement on November 15th 1941 (). After that she was succeeded by Mr. Vail who served until he died on December 8th 1951 (). Mrs.. Vail then served as acting mayor while Mr., Tom Murphy acted as Town Clerk prior to becoming mayoralty effective January 1st 1957 (). On January 1st 1957 extraordinary election resulted in Incumbent Tom Murphy being reelected with over 60% of the vote even though no candidate received more than 50% of all votes cast ({ECRI Report card 1955})
