Another story has it that two men, James Walford and William Kidd, come to Castle Rock and purchase firearms from local gunsmiths. The pair then sets out to shoot animals near the hills outside of town. Soon enough, residents have started calling these men "The gunslinger brigade." Another account has it that a group of men led by John Wesley Powell arrive in Castle Rock in 1865. They were looking for new land to explore and came across an abandoned ranch belonging to some people called the Gadsden brothers. When they entered the ranch, they found several handguns hidden among the belongings of the Brothers Gadsden. The Gunslinger Brigade soon became known as the Powell Gang because of this incident. Regardless of where these stories originated, one thing is for sure-gun slingers have always been a part of castle rock's history!
Castle Rock is a city in Pueblo County, Colorado, United States. The population was 27,827 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood metropolitan area. Castle Rock was founded by prospectors in 1879 and named for Fort Sill on the Arkansas River. The town rapidly grew due to its location at an altitude of 4,000 feet (1,200 metres) above sea level and its proximity to coal mines and other industries. By 1902, Castle Rock had become a city with a population of 507 people. In 1907 it annexed the neighboring town of Horseshoe Bend. The 20th century saw Castle Rock experience rapid growth as an automobile manufacturing center; by 1938 it had reached 1,500 vehicles per day. However, during World War II Castle Rock became one of the largest American contributors to war effort with its production of munitions and armor supplies for military service all over the continent. CastleRock experienced another boom period from the late 1950s through the early 1970s due in large part to tourism; however, increasing economic insecurity has led to decreases in employment opportunities in recent years and a decline in overall civic participation rates. As recently as 2006 only 25% of residents were born within five miles (8 km) of their home; today this number has decreased to just over 15%.

Castle Rock is a small town in Douglas County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Collins-Loveland Metropolitan Statistical Area. Castle Rock is located on the east side of the mountains and bordered by Aspen to the north, Pueblo to the east and south, and Silverthorn to the west. The first Europeans to visit what is now Castle Rock were looking for a place where they could trade goods with local Native Americans. They named this place "Castle Rock" after one of their own: John Kirkham (1688-1746). In 1876 two men prospecting for coal discovered oil shale there and began developing it into an oil production field that continues to this day. When CastleRock incorporated as a municipality in 1902, it became one of only six towns in Douglas County without a school district. The other five towns had districts before 1912 when ground was broken for what would become Loveland High School. In 1942 construction started on Fort Carson Air Force Base which would later become known as home to both American Forces Europe (AFCE) and United States Army Garrison Fort Bliss (USAGFBNBL). The project was dedicated on October 15th by General James Van Fleet who then proclaimed "the community of Castle Rock has been contributing its share toward making our great military community even greater". Today most people within 10 minutes' drive of AFCE or USAGFBNBL are aware of both bases through either work or play; however air traffic control remains essential during holiday season due to airspace restrictions set by neighboring Colorado Air National Guard units flying out of Buckley AFB east of Loveland

The town grew rapidly, and by 1858 it had reached a population of 1,500 people. The Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad arrived in 1861, and the town became an important transportation hub for the region. In 1865, CastleRock became part of Colorado Territory after the state was formed. In 1893, CastleRock was renamed Fort Collins after General George Armstrong Custer who fought at Little Bighorn during the Mexican-American War. In 1907, Fort Collins became a city when it joined the United States City Department. The city has since grown extensively and now has over 100,000 residents.
