Castle Rock is a town in County of Arapahoe, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It lies on the east bank of the San Juan River and is bordered by Douglas County to the north, Castle Rock Creek to the east, Gardena to the south, and La Plata Mesa to the west. The first settlers in what is now Castle Rock were prospectors who traveled upriver from Telluride in 1859. They named their new settlement "Castle Rock" after a small rock outcropping that they found near their location. By 1861, most of the original settlers had left for other parts of Colorado due to poverty and lack of available land. However, a few families remained until 1865 when sheriff Jno. Haddock assigned them all illegal gambling debts which led to their eviction from Castle Rock Township. In 1872 Alfred Waddell set up a stagecoach stop called Twin Buttes on what is now State Road 20 about two miles northeast of present day Castlerock. This became an important transportation hub for early residents as it served as both a stopping point for travelers coming downriver from Ft Collins and Denver as well as passengers traveling upriver from Aspen and Canisteo (later Torrey) Springs. Waddell also built several homes around this time including one still standing today on County Road 6 just northwest of present day Anaconda Park can be seen behind some trees off CR 20A close to where KUSA-TV Tower once stood
