Castle Rock is a small mountain located in the Uinta Mountains, about 25 miles south of Denver, Colorado. The peak has an elevation of 4,711 feet (1,451 m). It was first named by the surveyors who mapped the area in 1868. The name referred to a rock outcropping on top of the mountain and not to the castle that once stood there. Castle Rock was officially designated a national monument on July 14th, 1960. The earliest inhabitants of what is today Castle Rock were the Hahnsons. They built their homes near present day Gold Hill and raised livestock and hunted game around this location for centuries. In 1876, pioneer Capt James Hamer made his first landing at what is now Castle Rock after spending two years sailing his shipwrecked schooner Baltic overland from New York City to Fort Collins while supplies lasted. He renamed his new settlement after himself – Hamer Heights (later CastleRock) – in honor of his accomplishment. In 1881, John Wesley Powell arrived at what is now Castle ROCK during his famous First National Geographic Expedition and discovered five million acres (24 km2) of new country including Vail Valley which he dubbed “the Garden of Eden” because it looked so perfect compared to any other place he had seen on his travels across America. This discovery launched America’s exploration into an era never before attempted as many men explored our continent than had ever before! To this day we are still learning about these early explorers and their discoveries! Castle ROCK was originally used as a military base during World War II by the United States Air Force for training operations over Rocky Mountain airspace from 1941-1945 Additionally, it housed various civilian agencies associated with defense research from 1943-1945 such as NORAD headquarters #4 where radar operators monitored American skies for Nazi Germany during World War II Finally, it served as home to troops stationed at Camp Surplus until its closure in 1949 due to budgetary cuts all throughout Colorado government Today though it remains a popular tourist destination for outdoor enthusiasts looking for stunning views over Rocky Mountains National Park
