Castle Rock, Colorado is a town in Douglas County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,838 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Collins–Aurora Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first inhabitants of Castle Rock were Arapaho and Cheyenne people. These people hunted game in the area and collected plants and nuts from trees. In 1868, gold was discovered in Castle Rock by James Haggerty and his party while exploring the Gold Rush region of central Colorado. Haggerty named the town after himself, George Castleton Haggerty (1811-1872). The original buildings in town were built of adobe bricks found along the creek that ran through town. The first school was built on Main Street in 1871. A new school was erected on what is now courthouse square in 1902. In 1896, John Wesley Wright founded Wright Air Force Base which became one of the largest air forces in the world with its headquarters at Fort Collins Airport. Wright also donated land for a large park which is now called "Wright Park." The post office at Castle Rock served as a general store until it closed on December 12th, 1951 due to low mail volume; however, local residents continued to use this post office until 1978 when it reopened as an annex to nearby Rocky Mountain Life Insurance Company's main building located on 16th Avenue North near Brush Creek Road east of US Highway 605E (now Brush Creek Boulevard).
