In 1916, canon city incorporated as a boroughs with 5 wards and became official municipal government within 6 years In 1951, when San Miguel County merged with Denver County, Canon City became part of that new county too Since then, there has been continual growth and progress made by the community gemstone-mining industry

The name of Canon City is derived from an early silvermining operation in the area. The first post office opened in 1876 and was called Canon City Butte. In 1907, the name changed to Canon City after John F.canon, a United States Senator from Colorado who also served as President pro tempore of the United States Senate from 1907-1909. On July 1, 1912, Canon City became part of the new Denver-Aurora metropolitan Statistical Area and since then has grown rapidly due to its location near bothDenver and Aurora. Today, it is one of the fastest growing areas in Colorado because of its burgeoning economy and its status as a bedroom community for Denver residents. Canon City's rich history can be traced back to when silver was discovered on what is now known as canon city land in 1849 by prospectors led by William Hance and James Guthrie. By 1860, gold had been found on nearby hills but it wasn't until 1865 that silver was discovered on what would later become canon city land which helped spur development around this important Silver Mining District including canon city itself (founded 1876). With rapid growth came social change with many people moving into this developing district seeking jobs at local mines or other businesses such as flour mills or lumberyards; all while enjoying access to natural resources like watercourses and hills that would soon be developed into iconic tourist destinations today such as Aspen, Arapaho Hills National Monument or Golden Gate Park! In 1938 an event occurred that forever changed canon city with the opening of Keystone Canyon Dam across Keystone Creek which created dramatic changes to flood patterns throughout much of south centralColorado giving rise to names such as “The Canyon” for centuries thereafter! Today there are several trails leading into Keystone Canyon making it perfect for hiking or biking recreational activity! In 1906 John Fenton moved his family from Virginia to Canon City where they began miningsilver at what became known as Butte Mines (later renamed Hearst Mines) along with their brother Emilio Weiser who started operations just east of town on Highway 6 about two miles west of present day Main Street! business continued apace through World War I when production increased thanks largely to government stimulus programs; however during prohibition years prices went up sharply due primarily to federally supplied contraband liquor being smuggled into our state via railroads! However not everyone was happy about Prohibition - some locals even went so far asto form their own anti-prohibition party causing some friction within the community over social issues like gambling dens etc.; however overall sentiment within our fledgling towniewas positive towards newly formed government officials working hard towards a common goal!) After World War II ended things slowed down somewhat but not until 1959 did General Motors take possessionofButte Mines resulting in significant job creation!!
