Canon City is a city in the U.S. state of Colorado and the county seat of San Miguel County. The population was 69,826 at the 2010 census. Canon City is located on the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains and straddles both banks of Clear Creek, which forms its major thoroughfare. The first permanent settlement in what is now Canon City was made in 1876 by cattle ranchers who named their new town after Canon de la Hoz, an officer with Mexico's Army during its war with Peru. In 1886, a post office called Canon City was established, but it never had any real growth until 1906 when electric lights began to be installed in the area and people wanted to show off their new town for all to see. In 1916, more buildings were added to CannonCity when Denver-based businessman Wm Hildebrand donated land east of Main Street for a general store and residential development that would become known as "Hildebrand Heights." In 1924, Canon City became part of the newly created San Miguel County and quickly grew into one of its most important municipal centers due to its location on main roads linking other small towns within San Miguel County as well as downtown Denver. From 1951 through 1957, CannonCity saw dramatic growth due to oil production associated with Area 7 Production Field #1 (DPF-1), located just north of town on several thousand acres of former ranchland leased from Cimarron Oil Company by Ralston Hughes Minerals Corporation (HHM). This production facility yielded some world record gas volumes including 3 million cubic feet/day (100 metric tons/day) during 1952-1957; however operations stopped following an accident involving drums Loaded With Hydrocarbons that exploded while being transported near Geary Mesa Mall on November 12th 1957 killing five people and injuring many more; this event helped cause a declined demand for natural gas resulting in high prices for energy items throughout much of 1958. Canon City was founded by veterans of World War I and II who were displaced during the Great Depression. The city's first post office opened in 1935. In 1957, Canon City became an incorporated town. The population reached 2,000 in 1980 and 4,000 in 1990. As of the 2000 census, the population was 3,019. In 2002, Canon City merged with Lakewood to form a larger metropolitan area called the "CanonCity-Lakewood Combined Statistical Area." The history of Canon City goes back to 1881 when prospectors discovered gold near what is now downtown Canon City. A group of men organized the First Frontiers Club to explore this new gold country and found that they had struck it rich after finding over two hundred ounces (10 grams) of gold per tonne on their initial exploration trip northwest from Denver into Douglas County. This discovery led to a proliferation of mines throughout central Colorado as well as new towns being born along routes connected to these mining operations: Keystone (founded 1892), Manitou Springs (founded 1895), Golden (founded 1897), Auraria (founded 1902), Blue Mesa (founded 1907), Parker(born 1909), and White River Junction (originally White River Township). All these towns were renamed for General John Jumper USMC who had been lead forces in suppressing Native American resistance against white settlers during World War I: Keystone for General John Dupleix USMC; Manitou Springs for Major General James Haggerty USMC; Golden for Colonel George Armstrong Custer USMC; Auraria for Lieutenant Colonel Amos Eaton USMC; Blue Mesa for Captain Everett Swayne USAF/USNR; Parker for Captain Lewis Hildebrandt USAF/USNR; White River Junction for Major General Walton Patton Jr./USAF/USAID). In 1935, Harry Fenton Jr., founder and president of Fenton Paper Company started producing paper products out of his flour mill which he named "Canon Paper". With this new product line came increased demand from local businesses and residents alike as word spread about how great CanonPaper was quality-wise above other paper brands available at that time such as Wacoal or CorningWarehouse papers! By 1937 there were dozens if not hundreds of local businesses using canon paper products!canon paper company grew rapidly during this time with many branches popping up all over town!. In 1940 however WWII interrupted production on all those brand names except canon oil based on requirements by military Specification P-416 which mentioned olive drab colors so canon oil could be used instead! After WWII ended production on all those brands again but once again Many businesses continued using canon oil based products due its reputation! By 1952 most everyone had either switched over to trying another brand or retired them altogether because wars always tend to take their toll on business especially when it comes to prices charged by suppliers!:)during this time period also some members Of Thecanoncity Town Council began serving terms thruout their lives thruout their career !!!! Shortly before his death Harry Fenton left his estateto his son Frank who ran the company until 1987 when it went public.. From 1987 through 1999 Frank operated it under various management changes including discontinuing sales entirely then starting up again only briefly before being discontinued again :( Finally starting up once more in late 1999 under current management):)canon city experienced one final renaissance starting around 2001 thanks largely to efforts by several individuals within our community united together forming called "the force" we participated wholeheartedly in efforts aimed at revitalizing downtown areas like State Street & Main Street & much more!:)during this time period there were numerous events taking place throughout town including art shows music concerts film screenings etc.:) finally although things are slowly improving overall a few large issues remain unresolved such as lacklustre pay rates offered by certain suppliers (!); unfriendly customer service experiences reported by certain merchants (. . . ); high crime rates especially concentrated around downtown areas (. .. .) These negative trends have led some residents groups within our community looking towards moving forward with plans to form a secession movement should things not improve soon!:))
