Canon City is a city in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 17,912 at the 2010 census. At one time it was home to the Canon City Arsenal Ammunition Plant which made armor-piercing ammunition for the army and other customers. It closed in the early 1990s after a fire destroyed much of its equipment. The first gunfight with Indians in Canon City took place on October 15, 1876 when two prospectors were killed by Indian gunfire while exploring a remote area of the county. In 1903, an act was passed authorizing the purchase of rifles and shotguns by citizens of Colorado without having to pass a special exam. This law allowed more people to buy guns and caused the arsenal plant to be closed down.

Gun targets have been around since at least the 16th century. However, the modern firearm target was invented in 1795 by George Washington and Samuel Colt. The first successful firearms trials were held with targets in 1797. At that time,guns were still a novel concept and not widely adopted outside of the military until 1836 when they became standard issue to American troops. In 1865, John Browning designed the first air- Guns which could be fired from a plane with ease and Accuracy. His design revolutionized firearm shooting and changed how wars are fought today. From 1865-1892, more than 1 million gun targets were manufactured in America alone for use in rifle and artillery competitions, hunting purposes, or simply as displays of skill. The development of effective target pistols began in 1845 with Nicholas-Jacques Conte’s Perforated Cast Iron Pistol Target (also known as an English Target). This model was used for training police officers before their introduction into society as handguns became popular weapons during the Civil War era. It continued to be produced through World War II until it was replaced by metallic silhouette targets made from Bakelite or other plastic materials
The first recorded use of a gun target in combat was in 1643, when Spanish forces were attacking English settlers in New England. A group of men threw two burning shoes at a 100-pound iron ball, which created a diversion and allowed the Spanish to seize control of the colony.
Canon City, Colorado was founded in 1887 by George W. Canon and his wife, Anna Maria. The town was named for Canon's father, who had died in 1872. The Canons built a post office and store near the current site of Canon City in 1887. In 1890, the town became a county seat under the name of Westminster. In 1912, it was renamed to Canon City after George W. Canon's son-in-law, John A. Moffat III. The city experienced growth during World War II as the center of munitions production in Colorado Springs; however, it declined following the war and slowly lost population over the next several decades. By 2000, most of the old downtown buildings had been demolished and all that remained were some housing units and a few commercial properties around State Street. However, recent development has revived interest in Canon City with new restaurants and businesses opening up throughout the year.
Canon City is a small, unincorporated community located in Garfield County, Colorado. The town was founded in 1881 by Colonel John H. Canon and his wife Esther. It was named for Canon City, Kansas, the site of his father's first cattle operation. In 1906, the United States Postal Service established an office in the town and began to mail items from Canon City to other parts of the country. The post office closed in 1963 but its memories live on through USPS products like the "Canon City Mail" and stamps issued in commemoration of that era.
