The first permanent settlers in Canon City were three brothers who arrived from London in 1876 and named their new community after Canonbury, England. They built a store and post office near what is now downtown Canon City. The original town plat included a hotel and four blocks of land for housing only; it was not until 1888 that developers started building larger structures on the square mile (1 km2) core of the town center which remains its nucleus today. The arrival of automobiles made Canon City one of the most rapidly growing towns in Rocky Mountain County during the 1920s and 1930s with over 100 businesses opening up during that time period alone! In 1938, Canon City became an official city when voters passed an ordinance ratifying annexation by Aurora following a referendum campaign conducted by Mayor Harry Wiersch!. By 1940, all but one business had closed down due to World War II shortages which forced many businesses to close early due to rationing; however, several large companies such as Kress AG & Co., Jardine Matheson & Co., ALCOA Enterprises Inc., Western Electric Company still thrived throughout those years thanks to wartime production quotas! During World War II, although much damage was done within town boundaries including two homes destroyed by incendiary bombers over Main Street – nothing more than light posts at that point – much heavier destruction took place outside where power plants were situated including two churches which were completely leveled and their bell towers knocked down as well as other assorted residences and commercial buildings! However, despite this devastation almost all civilian infrastructure within range survived unscathed thanks to post-war construction restrictions placed upon numerous industries nationally! In 1951 incoming mayor John Cowles worked diligently with local businessmen Abe Goldstein and Don Giannini to develop plans for developing downtown into a modern shopping district featuring high end stores like Macy’s Department Store as well as restaurants such as Pabst Blue Ribbon Brewery/Brewers Park Social Club etc.; this plan eventually became reality becoming known affectionately as “Cowles Square”! Due in part to this effort plus strong support from city hall it didn’t take long before growth picked up once again resulting in even more businesses opening up along Cowles Square during ensuing decades making it one of Colorado’s premiere retail districts today!
