Canon City, Colorado is a town located in the U.S. state of Colorado. The population was 6,821 at the 2010 census. It is included in the Boulder-Aurora-Lakewood, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name of Canon City comes from Canon Creek and Cannon Hill which are both located in the town's center. Canon City was founded by Latter Day Saint pioneers on July 12, 1875, during the Mormon exodus from Nauvoo, Illinois. The first store in the city was opened by Wm Hurlbut and his brother James Wickersham on Dearborn Street near what is now Pikes Peak Boulevard. In 1876, a post office called Canon City was established and became part of Larimer County; it functioned until 1889 when it moved to Denver County under new county government structure envisioning an organized village with its own public square as well as a schoolhouse and grocery store for residents. In 1896, Brigham Young designated Cannon Valley Agricultural District No 2 as site for a large flour mill run by George Prentice & Sons (later renamed Gannett). This mill would be one of many wheat and corn mills built throughout central Colorado during this period; other early flour mills include those operated by John Stillwagon (1899), Jno Fenton (1901), Hiram Sully & Co.(1905), William Cullen Bryant(1907) and Alfred Hitchcock(1909). A post office called canoncity was established at this location on October 1st 1898; however mail service to the city ceased due to railroad construction in downtown Denver at that time. The first church services were held within the cannon valley Agricultural District No 2 mill complex on December 3rd 1898 by Elder Dallin Hanks with assistance from Orson Pratt officiating as minister of agriculture; later that year an additional chapel/church building erected adjacent to the existing flour mill complex served as both gatherings place for community events and worship facilities until demolition beginning around 1955 began removing all vestiges associated with early LDS Church activity from this site while also providing more open ground area potential development including housing developments! By 1907 there were already two schools - one elementary school serving students grades K-8th along Dearborn Street south of I-25 east of Union Pacific Railroad tracks then northward across Keystone Avenue into Apache Junction before continuing northeast on Keystone Avenue past Vail Lake up into Aspen Canyon where it rejoined Dearborn Street within Apache Junction School District #2 thereafter remaindng there until closure circa 1978 when Aspen Canyon School District #1 took over operations! One notable resident who taught briefly at these schools prior to their closure includes Mrs Lorenzo Cook (+/- 1914 - 1918) who taught 3rd grade math & science alongside music teacher Miss Emma Smith (+/- 1912 - 1916) during efforts preceding district takeover! Another educator who taught briefly enrolled at these institutions prior to their closureNOTE: Mrs Florence Condon (-/1966-) temporarily workedington Elementary School intermittently between 1959 thru 1966 teaching 3rd grade math & science alongside English teacher Mrs Agnes White +/+1960 thru 1966

The city became the county seat of San Miguel County in 1912 and then San Miguel County and Colorado Springs were combined to form El Paso County in 1916. The first post office in Canon City was established on July 12, 1872. The population of Canon City was only 5 people when it was founded. By 1890, the population had grown to over 50 people. In 1912, Canon City became the county seat of San Miguel County after its incorporation into Colorado Springs. In 1916, El Paso County and San Miguel County were merged to form another entity called Colorado Springs Municipal District which still exists today as part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood metropolitan area. In 1984, Canon City voted to become an independent city with its own elected officials and government structure separate from that of Colorado Springs. As an independently elected city,canoncity has had a variety of different economic interests within its borders including healthcare services (including hospitals), manufacturing (including firearms manufacturing), retail businesses such as small shops and restaurants, as well as tourism interests such as those related to mountaintop mining operations in nearby Gunnison National Park
