Canon City is a small city in the U.S. state of Colorado. With a population of around 10,000 as of 2017, it is the smallest municipality in the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood metropolitan area and the second smallest municipality in Colorado after Centennial Springs. The city was founded on July 24, 1876, by George Bird Griggs and his wife Mary Ann Griggs. It was named for Canon John Smith, an early settler and president of the Colorado Rangers. The first business in Canon City was a farmhouse that served as a hotel until 1887. A post office was established at Canon City on May 16, 1889, and remained in operation untilit closed on July 1, 1907. The first school in Canon City was initially called "Aurora" School but changed its name to "Canon City" School after incorporation. In 1912 the first high school opened in Canon City with four classrooms and thirty students. In 1916 the first vocational high school opened in CanonCity with two classes and sixteen students. The economy of canoncity has been based largely on agriculture since its establishment; however, other sectors such as manufacturing have also played an important role over time including printing services for businesses located within town limits (1914), trucking (1993), manufacturing (1996) headquartered at Parker Hannifin Corporation Headquarters Building which is now home to PepsiCo USA Inc., one of North America's largest beverage companies (2002), medical technology company Medtronic plc., having their primary headquarters there from 1989 to 2001 before moving their main headquarters elsewhere (2009) There are currently no major employers within town limits aside from local government entities that support services like fire protection or law enforcement
Canon City, Colorado was founded on April 6, 1876 by George R. Smith and James W. Nicholson. The town was named for Canon John Brown of the Mormon Battalion who fought in the Mexican-American War and was enshrined in the Colorado State Capitol Building’s plaza as a hero in 1893. The city went through various name changes until it settled on its present name on November 14, 1907. In 1916, Canon City became home to the first airmail service between Denver and Los Angeles using a Boeing 707 airliner flown by Capt. Edward Munch and pilot Virgil Akins.
