It was located on the east side of First Street between Court and Main Streets. The city grew rapidly during the early years of its existence and by 1900 it had a population of over 1,000 people. By 1907 Canon City had become one of the most important agricultural towns in Colorado because of its large crop production. During World War I Canon City became an important military installation as it served as a training ground for soldiers from all over Colorado and Wyoming. After the war ended, the city resumed its growth and by 1920 it had reached its current size. In that year it acquired some additional land which would later become part of downtown Canon City. Canon City experienced significant growth during the 1960s and 1970s when it became known as one of the most affluent communities in Colorado Springs. Over this period of time, much progress was made to improve infrastructure such as roads, schools, and hospitals within town limits while also creating new businesses and residences nearby. Today,canoncity is still a vibrant community with many cultural opportunities available for residents including music festivals throughout the year as well as art galleries and theaters which offer both local and international programming
