In 1814, prospector and entrepreneur George Kapp discovered new goldfields in what is now Weld County; this led to the mining industry being established hereabouts. Mining operations continued until the early 20th century when production ceased due to competition from other mines around the region. The town of Broomfield was platted on February 14, 1872 by Jeptha Smeaton and others under the name "Broomfield". It became a county seat on December 12, 1896 following enactment of state law giving Weld County its own government. On January 1, 1907, Broomfield incorporated as a city with a population of 400 people. At that time it was one of only two cities in Colorado without an independent school district; however it soon collapsed because of high rates for education and housing alike. In 1959 Broomfield merged with Aurora to form what is now known as the Denver–Aurora–BroomFIELD Combined Statistical Area (CSA). During World War II Bombing raids by American bombers killed more than 1/3rd of all residents in Aurora alone – including many children – making Aurora one of the most devastated communities during that conflict. Many buildings were destroyed or damaged beyond repair but some like City Hall still stand today - reflecting how resilient Aurora can be even though some parts have suffered great damage during wartime!
